Wisconsin Rep. Tiffany Opposes Pick for Director of Bureau of Land Management

Wisconsin Rep. Tiffany (R-WI-07) tweeted that he opposes the pick for the director of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wednesday, saying that Tracy Stone-Manning’s “history of eco-terrorism makes her unfit to lead our nation’s largest federal land agency.”

Stone-Manning was confirmed Thursday, with senators voting along party lines. As reported by the Montana Free Press, her confirmation was surrounded by intense debate. Allegedly some senators believed that Stone-Manning “lied to the energy committee about her involvement in the tree-spiking incident.”

Many Republican senators have expressed concerns about the nomination of Stone-Manning. In a letter that they wrote months ago, “The lawmakers wrote that the primary reason they are against Stone-Manning’s nomination is her involvement in a 1989 tree-spiking plot out of Idaho.”

According to Fox News, tree-spiking is an act of eco-terrorism which involves placing a metal rod into trees to prevent them from being cut down. The rod causes damage to the saw and in some circumstances has caused injuries to mill workers running the saws.

Stone-Manning was reportedly given legal immunity for her involvement in a 1989 tree-spiking plot for her anonymous testimony that she wrote in a letter in 1993.

Tiffany said that he was joining the Western Caucus to call Senate Democrats to reject Stone-Manning’s nomination.

Others echoed Tiffany’s sentiment, including Pennsylvania Representative Fred Keller (R-PA-12), where he tweeted, “Tracy Stone-Manning is unfit to run the Bureau of Land Management. She is an extreme nominee with ties to eco-terrorism and I strongly urge Senate Democrats to reject her nomination.”

Minnesota Representative Tom Emmer said that “a vote for Tracy Stone-Manning is a vote against rural America.”

As reported by the Montana Free Press, “her nomination was opposed by a long list of policy leaders and organizations, including two former BLM directors, logging groups, and sportsmen’s groups.”
